The Evolution of the Secret Service Badge
From its humble beginnings to its modern design
The Secret Service's first standard badge was issued in 1873. It was a simple, round badge with the words "United States Secret Service" around the edge. The badge was made of nickel-plated brass and was worn on the left lapel of the agent's coat.
Over the years, the Secret Service badge has undergone several changes. In 1894, the badge was redesigned to include the eagle and shield of the United States. In 1902, the badge was again redesigned to include the motto "Protect and Defend." The current design of the Secret Service badge was adopted in 1962.
The Secret Service badge is a symbol of authority and professionalism. It is worn with pride by the agents of the Secret Service, who are responsible for protecting the President of the United States and other high-ranking government officials.
