Nashville Dam Overtops, Evacuations Ordered

Evacuations Order for 200 Residents

Heavy Rains Cause Dam Breach

On July 26th, 2022, a secondary dam on the city reservoir in Nashville, Illinois overtopped after over four inches of rain fell in the area in less than 12 hours. The overtopping caused a 6-foot breach in the dam, leading to an immediate evacuation order for approximately 200 residents living downstream.

Emergency officials issued the evacuation order as a precautionary measure due to concerns about the potential failure of the dam. The evacuated residents were advised to seek shelter at a nearby community center or with friends and family outside the affected area.

The heavy rains also caused widespread flooding in the area, forcing the closure of several roads and bridges. Local authorities are urging residents to avoid the affected areas and to stay informed about the latest updates on the situation.

Crews are currently working to repair the breached dam and to assess the extent of the damage. The evacuation order is expected to remain in effect until it is deemed safe for residents to return to their homes.
