Detroit Pistons Fire Coach Monty Williams After Just One Season
Williams Fired After One Season, Will Receive $65 Million Buyout
Pistons Absorbing Remaining $65 Million on Williams' Contract
The Detroit Pistons have fired coach Monty Williams after just one season, according to a person with knowledge of the decision who spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday. The Pistons are absorbing the remaining $65 million on Williams' contract, which had six years and $78.5 million remaining.
The Pistons made a major push to hire Williams a year ago, signing him to a massive six-year, $78.5 million deal. However, the team struggled under Williams, finishing with a 32-50 record and missing the playoffs.
Williams' firing comes as a surprise, as he was considered one of the top young coaches in the NBA. He led the New Orleans Pelicans to the playoffs in each of his four seasons there, and was named the NBA Coach of the Year in 2016.
The Pistons are now searching for their fourth head coach in the past five years. They have not made the playoffs since 2009.
