Rageh Omaar: From Discouraged Son to Renowned Journalist

Early Life and Family

WEB Rageh Omaar, born on 19 July 1967, is a prominent British journalist and writer of Somali descent.

Despite his father's newspaper career, Omaar's path to journalism was not an easy one. His father discouraged him from entering the field, but Omaar's passion for storytelling ultimately prevailed.

Omaar married Nina Montgomery Cunningham in 2000. Nina is a therapist who specializes in mental health issues.

Career in Journalism

Omaar began his journalism career as a researcher at the BBC. He then moved on to become a reporter for ITN, where he covered the Bosnian War and the Rwandan Genocide.

In 2006, Omaar joined ITV News as the International Affairs Editor. He presents the flagship "News at Ten" program and has reported on major global events, including the Arab Spring and the Syrian Civil War.

Accomplishments and Recognition

Omaar has received numerous accolades for his work, including the Royal Television Society's Journalist of the Year Award in 2002 and 2006.

He is known for his courageous and insightful reporting, and his ability to provide a nuanced understanding of complex international issues.
